SUMMARY:The Kidnapping of George Weyerhaeuser
DESCRIPTION:No tickets necessary for this program. Free entry.\nJoin Cottage Grove’s Head Librarian\, Natasha Chitow\, as she describes the sensational crime that shocked the Pacific Northwest and nation in 1935\, the abduction for ransom of lumber heir George Weyerhaeuser which rivetted the public’s attention for a week. The kidnappers demanded $200\,000 in cash (over 4 Million today) and led his father on a series of late night forays\, following clues to eventually drop off the ransom money. George was released unharmed after spending time in holes\, riding around in trunks of cars\, and finally in a remote cabin.\nJoin us for this free History Night celebrating local history and the launch of the Springfield History Museum on-line catalog. The Springfield History Museum holds over 12\,000 artifacts related to the history of Springfield and rural east Lane County. This project was made possible through the support of the Springfield Public Library Foundation and in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act\, administered by the State Library of Oregon.

DESCRIPTION:The Last 100 Miles: The Fight for the Lower Deschutes River portrays the degradation of one ofthe finest trout and salmon sanctuaries in the world. The Deschutes River is fed by rain and snowfrom the rugged mountains of central and eastern Oregon. Dams built 60 years ago wiped outprolific salmon and steelhead runs\, yet the remaining 100 miles of free-flowing river became oneof the region’s beloved destinations for whitewater adventure and fishing. “We love this river\,” says local naturalist and fishing guide Amy Hazel\, who has lived near theDeschutes for 30 years. “It means everything to us\, so we’re going to do everything in our powerto save it.” Hazel\, alongside a trio of water and fisheries scientists\, were puzzled by signs oftrouble they observed in the river after Portland General Electric altered operations of the Pelton-Round Butte hydroelectric dam complex in 2010. Those changes have put the last 100 miles ofthe Deschutes River at risk. Unlike many modern ecological problems\, this one can be fixed. The Last 100 Miles depictsindividuals who love the Deschutes River and together are raising their voices. This Lane County premiere of The Last 100 Miles is organized by the Deschutes River Alliance(DRA). The Deschutes River Alliance is a science-based advocacy organization seekingcollaborative solutions to threats facing the Wild and Scenic Deschutes River and its tributaries.DRA advocates for cooler\, cleaner water\, a healthy ecosystem\, and the recovery and protectionof robust populations of resident and anadromous fish.
