SUMMARY:The Kidnapping of George Weyerhaeuser
DESCRIPTION:No tickets necessary for this program. Free entry.\nJoin Cottage Grove’s Head Librarian\, Natasha Chitow\, as she describes the sensational crime that shocked the Pacific Northwest and nation in 1935\, the abduction for ransom of lumber heir George Weyerhaeuser which rivetted the public’s attention for a week. The kidnappers demanded $200\,000 in cash (over 4 Million today) and led his father on a series of late night forays\, following clues to eventually drop off the ransom money. George was released unharmed after spending time in holes\, riding around in trunks of cars\, and finally in a remote cabin.\nJoin us for this free History Night celebrating local history and the launch of the Springfield History Museum on-line catalog. The Springfield History Museum holds over 12\,000 artifacts related to the history of Springfield and rural east Lane County. This project was made possible through the support of the Springfield Public Library Foundation and in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act\, administered by the State Library of Oregon.
